Progression of Anxiety

“Lifetime progression of anxiety”

I will repeat this many times and unapologetically so.  Untreated anxiety will always progress.  I am not referring to treating the symptoms of anxiety.  I am talking about using tools to “break up” these neurologic circuits. We are not taught these tools at an early age. Instead, there are many dysfunctional strategies we use to halt the progression of anxiety.  I will discuss these in the next section.

The natural progression of anxiety is:

  • Normal situation-appropriate anxiety response
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Schizophrenia
    • This is completely my own theory and not at all held out as valid by the mental health world.  However, that is a different book.

Using just a word progression one could use the words:

  • Nervous/anxious
  • Worrier
  • Fear
  • Panic
  • Terror
